Application Procedures

Degree programs and graduate certificates are offered by University of Colorado at Boulder's academic programs/departments. Students must contact the applicable academic program/department to request an application packet. Contact information can be found on the individual program/department pages.

Before Admission

You may register for classes through CAETE's distance learning option before formal admission to a degree program. However, a complete application package, including all forms, transcripts, letters of recommendation, and GRE scores if applicable, must be submitted to the academic program/department before finishing your third course. It is strongly advised that students contact the academic program/department before taking classes to discuss degree plans, requirements, and advising. Refer to the master's degree page for program/department information.

Courses taken before admission to a degree program (through CAETE) are counted as transfer credits (nondegree) as are courses originating from other CU campuses and other academic institutions. The Graduate School will not accept more than nine credits of nondegree work toward a master's degree. Students who exceed the limit must expect to lose those credits. Nondegree coursework is not included in the university degree GPA calculation.

The Graduate School rules and policies, found in the University of Colorado at Boulder Catalog apply to all degree and graduate certificate students whether studying via distance learning or on campus.

If you intend to complete your course work through CAETE's distance learning program rather than on campus, check "Yes" in the “Are you interested in CAETE” question on the graduate application. This instructs the program/department to process your application as a distance student and so that you will not be billed for the on-campus enrollment deposit and other student fees.

Participation in CAETE's distance learning option does not imply current or future admission to any degree or certificate program.

After Admission

  • All applicable courses taken after admission will count toward the degree.
  • There is no limit on the number of distance courses you can take, as long as they fulfill department degree requirements.
  • The Graduate School rules and policies, found in the University of Colorado at Boulder Catalog, apply to all graduate students. CAETE will mail a catalog to each distance student after admission to a degree program. On-campus students will receive a catalog from main campus.

All not-for-credit certificates and training programs are offered by CAETE's Short Courses and Certificates Program (SCCP). There is no admission application for SCCP. Simply complete the Non-credit registration form. If you're working toward a certificate, indicate the certificate name on the registration form.

Once all the requirements for a certificate have been completed, send a written request for the certificate to SCCP. Include your name, the certificate you have completed, and the address to which you would like the certificate sent.
