EMEN 5020: Finance and Accounting for Engineering Managers

Description
Provides the concepts and skills necessary to financially analyze project and assess financial performance and status of an organization. Includes the time value of money, comparison of alternatives, taxes, risk management, cash flow, and financial cash statements. Required for all degree students.

Benefits
  • Understand and apply concepts of the time value of money, and of risk and return.
  • Know how to assess the financial health of a firm.
  • Learn to use the various investment evaluation tools including NPV, IRR, and payback.
  • Learn how to manage growth in the context of maximizing firm value.
  • Understand financial instruments, capital assets, and the markets in which they exist.
Objectives
To assist the engineer in becoming conversant in accounting and finance fundamentals with emphasis on project assessment and valuation, value added, risk analysis, and real option analysis. Foundation elements of financial statements, budgets, cash flow estimation, time value of money, and opportunity cost are included.
Prerequisites
EMEN 5010 (Intro. to Engineering Management) or instructor consent.
