CVEN 5484: Intro to Environmental Microbiology (Classroom Only)

Description
Surveys microbiology topics germane to modern environmental science and engineering. It provides fundamental material needed to understand microbial processes and ecology in engineered and natural systems. The course reviews applications emphasizing the interface between modern microbiological concepts, and the classical charter of civil engineers and industrial hygienists to protect public health, as well as an understanding of basic biodegradation processes.
Outline
The course is organized into three main sections. The first section is an overview of fundamental biochemical concepts required to understand the physiology of the microbial world. The second section is an overview of microbial ecology, quantitation of microorganisms, and bioenergetics. The last section emphasizes the fundamentals of contemporary engineering applications in bioaerosols, bioremediation, disinfection processes, and microbially induced corrosion.
Benefits
  • Fluency with basic microbiology physiology and energetics as applied to public health and engineering practice
  • Understanding major applications in civil engineering systems: Disinfection processes and Corrosion
  • Understanding major applications in environmental engineering systems: subsurface bioremediation
  • Understanding survival mechanisms of microorganisms in the environment
Objectives
To impart a working knowledge of applied microbiology for environmental scientists and engineers.
Prerequisites
Completion of introductory course in university-level chemistry is required. Completion of a university-level pre-calculus course is required. Completion of a university-level calculus course would be helpful for understanding the dynamics of microbial disinfection and bioenergetics, but is not required.
