CSCI 5817: Database Systems
Description
Graduate-level database and information systems course. Topics: multimedia data management, multimedia data mining, databases in web applications, commercial database application development languages, databases in web development frameworks, XML compliant databases.
Outline
Relational database overview, SQL and application development languages in commercial relational products, XML and data on the web, Data mining, Database-centric web applications, Web development frameworks for database-centric websites
Benefits
Learn the basics of object-relational database systems in wide use today. Gain insight into the technical directions database systems will take in the near future. Understand emerging database systems applications such as web site development, and warehousing. Learn about modern high-volume transaction processing and understand why it is the backbone of information systems development.
Objectives
Develop an advanced understanding of database and information systems, and where this technology is headed in the next five to ten years.
Prerequisites
Introductory graduate database systems course, or experience with a database management system, or significant commercial software experience.

Multimedia Retrieval, Springer 2007, Blanken et al. There will also be a required paperback professional book, to be assigned later.
Hardware & Software
Web and e-mail access will be very useful but are not strictly required.
