TLEN 5380: Video Technology

Description
Students will obtain an in-depth knowledge of the specifics of various technical aspects of television and visual human perception and how image transmission and delivery fit into the telecommunications industry market mix. A comprehensive review of the major business and human factor perception issues will be made so that students will be able to evaluate video systems from a comprehensive management perspective. Not intended to provide training in specific current systems, the course provides sufficient background to non-technical types of how video works. Students who successfully complete this course should have the basis to understand future developments in all aspects of television technology. Course web site at http://itpcourses.colorado.edu/borsuk/tlen5380.
Outline
TV fundamentals visual perception and measurements, the scanning process, the analog TV waveform, elements of picture quality. US and international Analog Color Video Signals and Delivery Systems: NTSC, PAL, SECAMs, Television Transmitting Systems Broadcast TV, CATV/Cable TV Overview, Introduction to Satellite Systems, Fiber Optics in Television. A short final quiz or take-home exam is possible, but the focus of the last week's sessions will be the presentation of student papers on current topics in video systems and technology. If time permits, additional discussion may be possible on "hot topics" and further in depth discussion of the course material and additional topics as requested.
Objectives
Students successfully completing this course should be able to: Understand visual perception, electronic image concepts, and video components and systems as they relate to technologies important to the telecommunications industry. Evaluate emerging and new image systems such as high definition TV, digital TV, flat panel displays, etc., from a customer acceptance and business viewpoint. Understand how to evaluate impairments from a human factors and quantitative viewpoint in video systems. Have an introduction to issues relating to emerging and historical transmission and delivery choices, displays and pickups for analog and digital video systems.
